SOPHNET. - Binchotan (White Charcoal) Sunglasses
Valued for its unique characteristic, binchotan, or often called “white charcoal”, is use in a myriad of applications in Japan. Unlike traditional charcoal, binchotan is odorless when burn nor leave unsightly marking when handle. Instead, you would often see it in water bottles at restaurants and cafes because of its natural filtration trait.
Another of its special attribute is its strength, with hardness some compared to those found on cast iron. A reason why SOPHNET.’s creative director Hirofumi Kiyonaga decided to incorporate it into its new clear lens sunglasses. Plastic resin is mixed with amble amount of binchotan, then hand molded and finished individually.
The embedded binchotan gives a semi-translucent appearance much like a tortoiseshell.

Campaign: Tom Ford Fall / Winter 09 and Eyewear
Tom Ford’s Fall / Winter 09 ad campaign has now been spotted in the wild and seen on his website, including the controversial eyewear ads. The female model in the ads are Anna Jagodzinska and Tom Ford has brought back male model Jon Kortajarena.
The two are seen in various pieces for the campaign, well Anna is seen in various eyewear and nothing else. Initially when I saw these photos I thought they were done by Terry Richardson as it has a similar style to them, but as it turns out the photography work is credited to Tom Ford himself.

Oakley - Polarized Frogskin Sunglasses
Added to Oakley extensive Frogskin designs this Summer are 2 new editions - the Polarized Frogskin Sunglasses. Still retained the classic silhouette, its distinctness is in the lens, where Oakley implemented its unique polarized lens construction.Essentially an embedded filter, polarized lens drastically reduced glare.
Oakley created a new polarized lens production method, including Infusion Molding. Where as other manufacturers “sandwiched” polarized filters within the lens, Oakley actually smelter the filter elements into the lens itself on a molecular level.
And like its Plutonite counterpart, the polarized lens from Oakley is impact resistant as well as multiple coatings to reduce dust and water buildup. But the only noticeable difference on appearance is the etched lettering “POLARIZED” on the left lens.

High Costa living
kudos to Matt Costa for swapping out the usual UV-resistant lenses in his Costalots specs for top-of-the-line Italian-made ones by eyewear- (and camera-) snob favorite Carl Zeiss. They're standard-issue in the range's new Diego frame (pictured), which comes in both polarized and nonpolarized versions.
The shape's inspired by protective eyewear (and are made by Titmus Optical, which still manufactures industrial safety glasses and goggles) but the look is fifties-retro.
Costalots Diego sunglasses, $204, available now at costalots.com and Mollusk Surf Shop NYC, 210 Kent Ave., Brooklyn, (718) 218-7456, mollusksurfshopnyc.com
